OLD IS RARELY GOLD
Questioning Glorification of Old Customs and Traditions
Human societies have always been built upon their customs and traditions, which are regarded as the collective wisdom of their ancestors. These age-old practices have shaped cultures and provided a sense of identity and continuity. However, blind adherence to old customs is not always a commendable approach. Let us discuss how blindly following these traditions can be detrimental to social progress and equality, emphasizing the need to critically analyze and question their relevance in modern times.
Lack of Education, Knowledge, and
Superstition:
Old customs often originated from a lack of education and scientific knowledge. In the past, people relied on superstitions to explain natural phenomena or navigate life's challenges. However, as societies progressed and scientific advancements were made, many of these customs were proven to be based on flawed beliefs. Following them blindly today serves no purpose other than perpetuating ignorance and hindering progress.
Improper Social Prejudices and Sexism:
Traditional customs and rituals have, regrettably, been responsible for perpetuating social prejudices and discrimination. Gender inequality has been a pervasive issue, with women often bearing the burden of oppressive customs. Many ancient customs view women as inferior, restricting their rights and opportunities. Blindly adhering to such customs not only preserves sexist attitudes but also hampers progress towards gender equality. Unfortunately, many marriage ceremonies in developing countries and tribal communities today proudly showcase the same prejudiced customs and the so-called modern community (often unknowingly) encourages everything that was wrong about the past, in the name of ‘traditions!
Unscientific and Outdated Judgments:
The basis of many old customs and traditions often lies in unscientific and outdated judgments. These judgments can lead to discriminatory practices, social divisions, and the exclusion of certain groups. For instance, caste-based discrimination, prevalent in some societies, is rooted in antiquated notions of hierarchy and purity. Perpetuating these practices undermines the principles of equality, justice, and respect for all individuals.
Hypocrisy and Foolishness:
Practicing outdated customs in contemporary society often reveals a sense of hypocrisy and foolishness. As societies become more interconnected and open-minded, it is crucial to scrutinize the intentions behind the continuation of these customs. Sometimes, they are preserved mainly for the sake of appearances or to maintain the status quo. Rigid adherence to traditions despite their contradicting values or views demonstrates a lack of critical thinking and an unwillingness to adapt to changing times.
Learning Lessons and Moving Forward:
Instead of blindly following old customs, it is vital to view them as historical artifacts and learn from them. By studying and understanding these traditions, we gain insights into what not to do and how social progress can be hindered. We can appreciate the struggles of our ancestors and the barriers they broke, allowing us to build a more just and inclusive society. Reflecting on past customs and traditions enables us to question their relevance, adapt them to modern values, and discard those that perpetuate discrimination, injustice, or inequality.
